This unique optical property not only fascinates collectors but also led to associations with the "Viking's compass," which, according to legends, helped them navigate in overcast weather. As a magnesium, iron, and aluminum silicate, it was scientifically described and named cordierite in honor of French geologist Louis Cordier in 1813.
