Watermelon tourmaline is a fascinating and exceptionally beautiful variety of the mineral tourmaline (most often elbaite), known for its unique two-tone (bicolor) color, which visually resembles a juicy slice of watermelon. It usually has a bright pink or red center (the crystal core), surrounded by a contrasting green outer zone (the 'rind'). Sometimes these zones can be separated by a thin white or colorless layer. This characteristic color zoning occurs due to changes in the concentration of chemical elements during crystal growth in natural conditions.

Manganese is responsible for the pink and red shades, while impurities of iron or chromium give the green color. The intensity and saturation of the colors can vary, creating unique patterns in each stone.

The most famous deposits of watermelon tourmaline are located in Brazil (Minas Gerais state), but quality specimens are also found in Madagascar, Nigeria, Mozambique, Afghanistan and the USA (California, Maine). The mineral is formed mainly in granite pegmatites - rocks formed in the late stages of magma crystallization and enriched with rare elements. Due to its unusual beauty and relative rarity of quality specimens, watermelon tourmaline is highly valued in jewelry and among mineral collectors. It is often cut in the form of plates (slices) to maximize the demonstration of the unique color transition, and is also used to create cabochons and faceted inserts in exclusive jewelry.
