5400 UAHQuartz is an extremely common and at the same time surprisingly diverse mineral, the basis of which is silicon dioxide (SiO₂). It is one of the key minerals of the earth's crust, captivating with its beauty and properties.
Known for its considerable hardness (7 on the Mohs scale), which makes it resistant to scratches and ideal for jewelry and decorative objects. Quartz has a characteristic glassy luster and can range from perfectly transparent to completely opaque. Unlike many other minerals, quartz does not have cleavage (the ability to split along smooth planes), but instead has a characteristic conchoidal fracture.
Its true appeal is revealed in the richness of colors and shapes. The most famous varieties include:
- Rock crystal: Colorless, transparent quartz.
- Amethyst: Shades from pale lilac to deep purple.
- Citrine: Light yellow to golden brown.
- Rose quartz: Soft pink tones, usually translucent.
- Smoky quartz (rauchtopaz): Gray to brown or almost black, transparent to translucent.
- Milky quartz: White, translucent or opaque.
There are also microcrystalline varieties of quartz (chalcedony), such as agate, onyx, jasper, carnelian, which have their own unique beauty.
Quartz crystals form in a variety of geological settings - from igneous and metamorphic rocks to hydrothermal veins, and are found almost all over the world. This makes it accessible and at the same time endlessly interesting for collectors. In addition to its aesthetic value, quartz has important practical importance. Its piezoelectric properties are used in precision electronics, in particular, in quartz watches and resonators. It is also a raw material for the production of glass, ceramics and abrasive materials.
The variety of shapes, colors and unique properties make quartz a valuable mineral for scientific research, as well as for connoisseurs of natural beauty and collectors.
Peridot, also known as chrysolite, is a precious variety of the mineral olivine that captivates with its unique olive-green or bright green color with characteristic golden or yellowish highlights.
This stone has been prized by jewelers and collectors for centuries for its fresh, vibrant beauty and brilliance. Its signature green color is due to the presence of iron in the crystal structure. Unlike many other gemstones, peridot's color is idiochromatic, meaning it comes from the mineral's underlying chemical makeup, not impurities. Its transparency and bright, vitreous luster make it an excellent choice for cutting and use in jewelry - from elegant earrings to statement rings and pendants.
The most famous deposits of quality peridot are found in Pakistan, Myanmar (Burma), China, Vietnam, Ethiopia and the USA (Arizona). Historically significant is the deposit on the volcanic island of Zabargad in the Red Sea (Egypt), which was mined during the time of the pharaohs. Peridot is formed deep in the Earth's mantle and is brought to the surface by magmatic processes. Uniquely, peridot crystals are also found in some types of iron-stone meteorites - pallasites, making it one of the few gemstones of extraterrestrial origin. Historically, peridot has been associated with light, protection and positive energy. It is sometimes called the "evening emerald" because its green color remains bright even in artificial lighting. It was believed to promote clarity of thought and emotional balance.
Today, peridot remains a popular gemstone due to its attractive appearance and relative availability. It is the official birthstone for August. Its vibrant color and history make it a valuable specimen for mineralogical collections and a great choice for those seeking a unique and beautiful natural stone.
