Herkimer Quartz, often referred to as a 'Herkimer Diamond,' is an exceptional and highly prized form of quartz (rock crystal). It gets its name from Herkimer County, New York, USA – the classic locality for these brilliant crystals. The 'diamond' moniker refers not to its composition, but to its natural bright luster, high transparency, and characteristic shape, often resembling a faceted gemstone.

The primary characteristic of Herkimer Quartz is its perfect double-terminated (biterminated) crystal form. This means the crystal has naturally formed points (terminations) at both ends, as it typically grew freely within cavities (geodes or vugs) in the host rock, rather than attached to a base (matrix). This unique morphology makes it particularly appealing to collectors. Crystals often exhibit exceptional clarity and transparency, although many contain unique inclusions: tiny fluid bubbles (sometimes movable – enhydros), dark hydrocarbon particles (often anthraxolite), or even microscopic crystals of other minerals. These inclusions do not detract from the stone; rather, they add individuality and scientific interest.

While the classic and most renowned specimens originate from New York, double-terminated quartz crystals with similar morphology are found in other parts of the world, including Pakistan, Afghanistan, China, and Ukraine. However, the term 'Herkimer Diamond' is traditionally associated with American finds. They are prized by collectors and mineral enthusiasts for their natural perfection, strong luster, and unique growth habit.

Its crystal clarity and brilliant sparkle are believed to inspire clear thought and focus. Herkimer Quartz is a true natural wonder, showcasing the beauty of crystalline growth, and is a desirable addition to any mineralogical collection.
