Iolite, also known as cordierite, is a fascinating mineral known for its striking pleochroism: its ability to display different colors (from deep purple-blue to gray and yellowish) when viewed from different angles.

This unique optical property not only fascinates collectors, but has also given rise to associations with the "Viking compass" that, according to legend, helped them navigate in cloudy weather. As a silicate of magnesium, iron, and aluminum, it was scientifically described and named cordierite in honor of the French geologist Louis Cordier in 1813.
