Ring with cacholong

Caholong is a unique variety of common opal, known for its exquisite milky-white or light color and characteristic porcelain or pearly luster. Like all opals, it is hydrated silicon dioxide (SiO₂·nH₂O). Contrary to a common erroneous etymology, the name "caholong" probably comes from Turkic or Kalmyk languages ​​(e.g. "kaše" - river and "halong" - stone), reflecting the places where it is found, and not indicating "poor quality".

Caholong is formed mainly in sedimentary conditions or near geothermal springs. Its beauty lies not in the play of colors (opalescence), characteristic of noble opals, but in its uniform, delicate color and smooth, porcelain-like texture. Some specimens may contain inclusions or areas of other minerals, such as iron oxides, which create interesting mottled patterns ranging from light brown to reddish, adding to the stone's individuality. Due to its elegant opacity and calm beauty, cajole is a popular selection material.

It is used to make cabochons, beads, jewelry inserts and decorative objects. It is also valued by mineral collectors for its aesthetic qualities. It is important to remember that cajole is a relatively soft mineral with a hardness of 5.5-6.5 on the Mohs scale. This means that it needs to be treated with care and protected from scratches, impacts and contact with hard objects or abrasives. Avoid wearing cajole jewelry during intense physical activity. Use only warm water, mild soap and a soft cloth to clean, avoiding harsh chemicals.
