Pendant with Tourmaline and Ruby

Tourmaline is not a single mineral but a complex group of borosilicate minerals, captivating with an incredible diversity of colors and shades. From deep black (schorl) to vibrant pink (rubellite), rich blue (indicolite), and green (verdelite), and sometimes even combining several colors in one crystal (polychrome, or "watermelon" tourmalines) – the palette of this stone is boundless. Its name comes from the Sinhalese word "turamali," meaning "stone of mixed colors," perfectly describing its unique characteristic.

Since ancient times, tourmaline has been prized for its exceptional beauty and versatility. It forms primarily in granitic pegmatites and metamorphic rocks, with deposits found worldwide, including Brazil, Afghanistan, the USA, Madagascar, and various African countries. Thanks to its significant hardness and attractive vitreous luster, tourmaline is a popular and valuable gemstone widely used in jewelry.

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, tourmaline exhibits interesting physical properties, such as piezoelectric and pyroelectric effects – the ability to generate an electrical charge under mechanical pressure or temperature change. These properties are linked to its complex, asymmetric crystal structure.

Tourmaline is a sought-after specimen for mineral collectors due to its variety of forms and colors, and an excellent choice for creating original and vibrant jewelry pieces that highlight nature's astonishing artistry.
