Contrary to a common mistaken etymology, the name "cacholong" likely originates from Turkic or Kalmyk languages (e.g., "kaše" - river and "halong" - stone), reflecting its discovery locations rather than indicating "poor quality".

Cacholong primarily forms in sedimentary environments or near geothermal sources. Its beauty lies not in the play of colors (opalescence) characteristic of precious opals, but in its uniform, delicate coloring and smooth, porcelain-like texture. Some specimens may contain inclusions or zones with admixtures of other minerals, such as iron oxides, creating interesting spotted patterns with shades from light brown to reddish, adding individuality to the stone. Thanks to its elegant opacity and serene beauty, cacholong is a sought-after material.

It is used for making cabochons, beads, jewelry inlays, and decorative objects. It is also valued by mineral collectors for its aesthetic qualities. It is important to remember that cacholong is a relatively soft mineral with a hardness of 5.5-6.5 on the Mohs scale. This means it requires careful handling and protection from scratches, impacts, and contact with hard objects or abrasives. Avoid wearing cacholong jewelry during intense physical activity.
