Prazem quartz, more commonly known simply as Prazem, is an attractive variety of macrocrystalline quartz distinguished by its characteristic green color. This color is due to small, often needle-like, mineral inclusions, most often green actinolite, but hedenbergite, chlorite, or hornblende may also be present. It is these mineral inclusions that give the stone its unique texture and visual interest, making each specimen unique. Prazem shades range from pale green to deep onion green, depending on the type, density, and distribution of the inclusions.
Unlike chrysoprase (a nickel-colored variety of chalcedony), prazem's green color comes from these visible microinclusions of other minerals within the quartz crystal. Praseite is usually found in veins and cavities in rocks, often in association with other varieties of quartz, such as rock crystal, amethyst, or smoky quartz.
Significant deposits of praseite are found in various parts of the world, including the island of Elba (Italy), Brazil, Finland, Austria, Scotland, and the United States. Due to its attractiveness and sufficient hardness (7 on the Mohs scale), praseite is valued in jewelry. It is used to create original cabochons, beads, pendants, and other ornaments. The stone has a vitreous luster, and its polished surface is smooth. Unique patterns created by inclusions can appear differently depending on the lighting, adding depth to the stone.
Praseite is also a popular object for mineral collectors due to its aesthetic appeal, relative rarity compared to other varieties of quartz, and interesting geological history.
