Kyanite

Kyanite is a fascinating silicate mineral that is captivating with its predominantly blue hues, ranging from pale blue to deep sapphire or indigo. Green, gray, white, and sometimes even orange or black varieties are also found. Its exceptional beauty is emphasized by the often pronounced zonation of color and bright pleochroism - the ability to show different shades of color when viewed from different angles. The characteristic shape of the crystals is elongated, lamellar (shovel-shaped), which gives the mineral an elegant appearance. Kyanite is formed in metamorphic rocks such as gneisses and schists under the influence of high pressure.

The main commercial deposits are in Nepal (known for its bright blue specimens), Brazil, the United States, Switzerland, Myanmar and Kenya. A unique property of kyanite is its anisotropy of hardness: it has different hardnesses depending on the direction along the crystal. Parallel to the length of the crystal, the hardness is 4.5-5 on the Mohs scale, while perpendicularly - 6-7. This feature makes it interesting for collectors and requires skill in cutting. Kyanite is highly valued in jewelry (especially transparent blue varieties) and as a collector's mineral.
