It takes its name from Herkimer County, New York, USA, the classic location of these brilliant crystals. The nickname 'diamond' is not related to its composition, but to its natural bright luster, high transparency, and characteristic shape, often resembling a faceted gemstone.
The main feature of Herkimer quartz is its perfect biterminated (biterminate) crystal form. This means that the crystal has naturally formed peaks (points) at both ends, as it usually grows freely in cavities (geodes or caverns) in the rock, rather than on a base (matrix). This unique morphology makes it particularly attractive to collectors. The crystals are often exceptionally clear and transparent, although many contain unique inclusions: tiny bubbles of liquid (sometimes mobile - enhydros), dark particles of hydrocarbons (often anthraxolite), or even microscopic crystals of other minerals. Although the classic and most famous specimens come from New York, similar in morphology biconcave quartz crystals are found in other places of the world, including Pakistan, Afghanistan, China and Ukraine. However, the term 'Herkimer diamond' is traditionally associated with American finds. They are valued by collectors and mineral connoisseurs for their natural perfection, strong brilliance and unique growth form.
