Hematite (Fe₂O₃) is a common mineral, an iron oxide, that is fascinating for its characteristic metallic to semi-metallic luster and colors ranging from steel gray and iron black to reddish brown. Its name comes from the Greek word "haima" (blood), referring to the bright red color of the mineral's streak, which becomes apparent when ground into powder or scratched on unglazed porcelain.
This mineral can occur in a variety of forms, making it an interesting object for collectors: from dense massive aggregates and spectacular kidney-shaped or cluster-shaped formations (so-called "kidney ore") to shiny crystalline plates (specularite or "iron luster") and earthy, powdery clusters (red ochre). Hematite is formed in various geological settings: in sedimentary rocks (as the main component of iron ores), hydrothermal veins and as a result of metamorphism. It is one of the most important sources of iron for industry.
Historically, hematite was used as a pigment due to its rich red powder. Today, in addition to its industrial value as an iron ore, it is valued in jewelry (especially its mirror varieties) and as a popular collector's mineral due to its variety of forms, expressive luster and rich history.
