Unlike noble opal, the value of chocolate opal lies precisely in the depth and attractiveness of its basic color, and not in the play of light (iridescence), although some specimens may exhibit faint flashes of color or interesting patterns. Shades can vary from light brown and beige to deep dark chocolate.

Chocolate opal is mostly cut into cabochons for use in jewelry such as rings, pendants, and earrings.
